Tooth Replacement Options in Marietta, GA
Missing a tooth is urgent, and it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Not only can your ability to smile, speak, and chew be affected, but neighboring teeth and overall bone health can also be damaged. At Atlanta Dentures, we’re proud to offer a variety of tooth replacement options.
Crowns and bridges
Crown is a cover that fits over your original tooth. Crowns can be used to cover dental implants, discolored or oddly-shaped teeth, teeth not large or strong enough for necessary fillings, to protect a delicate tooth from breakage, or as a base for a bridge. A dental bridge, as you might guess, is a set of artificial teeth that “bridges” a gap.
Unlike dentures, a bridge is permanently cemented into your mouth and is not removed for cleaning. Most candidates for crowns and bridges are also candidates for dental implants. Crowns and bridges tend to be the less expensive option, though they do require specific care, such as attention to the surrounding gum area and regular follow-up visits.
Dental implants are a durable, long-lasting replacement for missing teeth when systemic and oral health is in great condition. If successful, dental implants don’t affect neighboring teeth or bone.
However, dental implants do require surgery. During the procedure, a titanium screw is embedded into the jawbone. From there, the implant must fuse with the bone, and the process can take up to six months. As with any surgery, there’s always a risk of infection. In some cases, bone grafts and additional dental work are necessary. Finally, dental implants can be quite costly and are often not covered by insurance. Most importantly, poor health and oral hygiene can cause implant failure just as it does failure of natural teeth.
You might be surprised to learn that dentures are affordable and versatile. Available in sets of one to 15 teeth, they’re a great option for patients who are missing multiple teeth or whose adult teeth are damaged or decayed. Along with being the most affordable option for tooth replacement, the procedure is non-invasive. Dentures can be removed easily, are comfortable to wear, and look just like natural teeth.
Your denture journey will require several office visits. After the extraction of decayed or damaged teeth, you’ll be provided with immediate dentures – also called temporary dentures – which you will wear until your gums have healed. Then, you can move on to your premium or deluxe permanent dentures. Getting used to eating and speaking with your new dentures will take a little practice. Sometimes dentures can feel a bit lose and prone to squeaking in the beginning. They do need to be removed for cleaning.
